Welcome to Classes 1, 2 & 3 (Reception)

Half Term Topics 4 November - 19 December

 

Activities:

During this half term, your children will be getting to know more about celebrations in their own culture and others cultures.

This will include birthdays, Christmas, weddings, christenings. We will be looking at the Hindu/Sikh festival of Diwali.

Here is a flavour of what we will be doing in each area:

 

Communication, Language and Literacy

  • Continue to develop your child’s confidence and ability to talk to others in school- both adults and children.
  • Encouraging your child to develop their listening and turn-taking skills
  • Extending your child’s vocabulary –naming, labelling and describing.
  • Sharing books with your child, and applying their phonic skills and knowledge of tricky words
  • Developing their knowledge of the structure of books-beginning ,middle and end
  • Becoming aware of  the characters, settings and main story lines of simple texts
  • Being involved in role play –for example a birthday party or Santa’s workshop
  •  Use their phonic knowledge to write simple regular words and make phonetically attempts at more complex words.
  • Writing for a purpose- on cards, writing lists, simple sentences
  • Practise simple letter formation

 

 Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy

  • Encouraging your child to recognise, count and order numbers to 20
  • Developing their ability to compare amounts, saying which is more, fewer or the same
  • Consolidate  simple addition and extend to problem solving activities
  • Count repeated groups of the same size.
  • Share objects into equal groups and count how many in each group
  • Naming and describing simple shapes-
  • 2D-triangle, square, rectangle, circle
  • 3D –cube, cuboid, sphere, cone, cylinder
  • Helping your child to respond to and using simple positional language
  • Recognise, continue and create repeating patterns
  • Continue to use the language of measurement-longer/shorter, heavier/lighter, full/empty
  • Use their own criteria to sort objects according to their similarities and differences

 

 Knowledge and understanding of the World

  • Becoming aware of patterns and changes in the world around them-seasons, weather, living things etc
  • Investigating various materials-e.g the best paper for wrapping presents
  • Learning to use simple tools and techniques-scissors, split pins etc
  • Using appropriate software and programmable toys-Beebot, paint programmes etc
  • Making and constructing with a purpose in mind-e.g presents for the party area,
  • Remembering significant events in their own experiences and those of people close to them-celebrations in their families
  • Becoming aware of their environment and talk about change-e.g the new outdoor area

 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • To continue to develop their  independence and confidence in school
  • To stay for longer on tasks, become more involved and persevere
  • Continue to be interested, excited and motivated to learn.
  • Be confident to try new activities, initiate ideas and speak in a familiar group.
  • Begin to develop a knowledge of and respect for their own and others’ cultures
  • To form good relationships with adults and chidren
  • Expressing their needs and feelings appropriately and to be aware of the needs of others.
  • Helping your child  to dress and undress independently and to appreciate the needs for hygiene

 

Physical Development

 
  • Moving freely in a variety of ways-hop,jump, slide etc
  • Negotiating space successfully to avoid obstacles and others.
  • To sit, stand and balance on various parts of the body.
  • To observe the effects of activity on their bodies
  • To be aware of safety issues-space, correct use of tools etc
  • Developing their coordination, using one-handed tools
  • Showing control over clothing and fastenings
  • Show control in using large equipment for climbing and swinging, and small equipment for catching and throwing
  • Show increasing control of small equipment-throwing, kicking a ball for example

 

Creative Development

  • Using language, music, art and movement to express themselves and capture their experiences
  • To use different medias-e.g pastels, paint, pencils, clay etc
  • To sing simple songs-for the Christmas concert
  • To explore instruments and how to change sounds, to explore different rhythms
  • To participate in role-play and imaginative play-party area, Santa’s workshop for example
